Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmaneul Adebayor is set to play at the African Cup of Nations, according to the head of the Togo Football Federation.

The 28-year-old, who retired from international football in 2010 before returning in November 2011, appeared set to miss the tournament due to his concerns over the team’s security and unpaid bonuses.

But the head of the Togo Football Federation Ameyi Gabriel is reported to have told Radio Algeria International that the Spurs forward will feature in the competition, which starts on 19 January.

“Of course we’re in the African Nations Cup with Adebayor, we will be together in South Africa,” said Gabriel.

“It is very important to have him there because he is our player and captain of the team.”

Last week, Tottenham manager André Villas-Boas revealed he was unsure of Adebayor’s plans for the CAN – but the former Chelsea boss was adamant he had no issue with the striker playing in the tournament.

“It’s a vulnerable situation, anything can happen,” he said. “I’ve told you the player can still go, I understand it is still a possibility.

“It was always his choice, I’m not going to put pressure on him. We’ve left it to player to decide. If player wants to go, we respect the African Nations Cup.”
