André Villas-Boas believes that Gareth Bale is worthy of comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo after the winger fired Tottenham to victory over Lyon on Thursday.

Bale struck two stunning free-kicks either side of Samuel Umtiti’s equaliser at White Hart Lane to give Spurs a slender advantage in their Europa League last-32 tie ahead of next week’s return leg.

The 23-year-old Welshman has now netted all of Tottenham’s last six goals after an impressive few weeks.

And the Tottenham coach was gushing with praise for the winger after Thursday’s late victory.

When asked if Bale was comparable to Ronaldo, Villas Boas replied: “Yes, he’s going through a great individual moment, scoring lots of goals for the team.

“I think it’s his best goal-scoring season for Tottenham. You just see that the player is really enjoying his football and taking a buzz out of it.

“We’ve seen him score three in two games from this situation and there is that possibility, there is an expectation because the player strikes it well and anything can happen, most likely a goal is likely to happen.”
