Ashley Cole is set to make his 100th England appearance against Brazil at Wembley on Wednesday night.

The Chelsea defender made his debut in 2001 and featured for the Three Lions at five major tournaments, remaining an ever-present at left-back.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction to Cole’s feat from professionals past and present, including some England legends.

The man of the moment himself (‏@TheRealAC3) thanks all the well-wishers: “Thanks to everyone that has supported me through my good times and bad times, means a lot to me #afc #cfc and crystal palace #100notout”

Former England bowler Darren Gough ‏(@DGoughie) responds to Cole’s tweet: “@TheRealAC3 have a great game as always. Congrats on the century, plenty more in the tank I reckon.”

Cole’s Chelsea team-mate Josh McEachran (‏@JMcEachran20) on loan at Middlesbrough – pays his respect: “Congratulations to @TheRealAC3 for making his 100th cap tonight for England! What an achievement!”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) pays credit to another Three Lions legend: “Congratulations to @TheRealAC3 on winning his 100th cap. One of the golden generation that always delivered in tournaments. Top player!”

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler (‏@Robbie9Fowler) says Cole’s off-field antics shouldn’t dilute his England achievements: “Whatever you think of Ashley Cole off the pitch shouldn’t deter the fact he is class on it… 100 caps is an unbelievable achievement.”

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney (‏@WayneRooney) keeps it short: “RT ‘@abs_ayub: Congrats bro @TheRealAC3 well-done lad!”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (‏@morriskid) wants Cole to get the reception he deserves: “Would be a shame if Ash Cole didn’t get a good reception..no matter your opinion of him,..his performances for England can’t be questioned!! I personally think he’s England’s greatest-ever left-back by some distance!”

England batsman Kevin Pietersen (‏@kevinpp24) wishes one of his favourite Chelsea players well: “Congrats on the big 100 @TheRealAC3.. play well buddy!”

Finally, former England wicketkeeper Alec Stewart ‏(@StewieCricket) is glad to see a Chelsea legend get the praise which he deserves: “Congrats and good luck to @TheRealAC3 of @chelseafc on his 100th cap v Brazil. Great achievement by one of England’s finest ever. #100notout”
