Ryan Giggs and Robin van Persie fired Manchester United to a 2-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday, moving the Red Devils 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Elsewhere, Christian Benteke and Charles N’Zogbia scored late goals to help Aston Villa edge past West Ham United at Villa Park as Paul Lambert’s men made it out of the relegation zone.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction to Sunday’s games from the professionals – past and present – in chronological order.

Former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel ‏(@JUANPABLOANGEL) is delighted to see his old side win: “Coming out of practice and find out that #AVFC is out of the relegation zone! Great news #upthevilla”

United legend Peter Schmeichel ‏(@Pschmeichel1) keeps it short and sweet: “12 points:-)”

Red Devils centre-half Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) names his man of the match: “Nice three points that today. 2-0 at OT. Rafa man-of-the-match for me. Couple of great challenges and an assist! Roll on Wednesday vs Madrid…”

And his former team-mate Gary Neville ‏(@GNev2) is shocked to see someone agree with his expert opinion: “@rioferdy5 First time anyone has ever agreed with my MOM!! Haha!”

Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) replies: “@GNev2 great minds + all that!”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) is furious to see a former Arsenal star doing so well: “Gazidis and Wenger handed the league to United for £24m. Utterly disgraceful piece of ‘business’. #Arsenal”

Ex-United defender Mikael Silvestre ‏(@IamMSilvestre) wants to know if anyone going to challenge United: “12 points ….anybody there??? #MUFC”

Everton’s Shane Duffy ‏(@ShaneDuffy34) is looking forward to some playing time: “Tough game today against a strong team. Can’t wait for a game tomorrow against Fulham in the reserves or ill forget how to play soon lol”

Toffees captain Phil Neville ‏(@fizzer18) is frustrated after the loss: “Gutted with the result, didn’t quite do enough today – second goal killed us just before half-time – need to start another run now, lots to play for still!”

Former Villa midfielder Ian Taylor ‏(@IanTaylor7) praises United’s star: “#Giggs is an absolute phenomenon. #player”

While United striker Wayne Rooney (‏@WayneRooney) reveals he doesn’t get a free MUTV subscription: “RT ‘@_RyanCook: Wonder if @WayneRooney pays 6 quid a month for MUTV?!’ Yeah I do!”

Finally, Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva ‏(@LucasLeiva87) is looking forward to Monday night’s match: “Very happy and proud to play my 200th game for LFC tomorrow.”
