Chelsea booked their place in the Europa League quarter-finals courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Steaua Bucharest at Stamford Bridge.

John Terry, Juan Mata and Fernando Torres all scored to seal a 4-2 aggregate win, while Papiss Cissé netted a late winner for Newcastle United against Anzhi Makhachkala at St James’ Park.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, to a hectic night of Europa League action.

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann) reckons Torres just can’t get a break – a positive one: “First assist for Torres in quite some time, unfortunately it was for the opposition.”

Ex-Reds midfielder Jason McAteer ([email protected]) criticises Chelsea’s defending of the corner which Steaua score from: “Zonal marking is about as useful as me working for NASA #manforman”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) is concerned Rafael Benítez won’t be adventurous enough to score the goals needed: “We need two goals!!! Any chance Rafa???”

Coventry City defender Jordan Stewart ‏(@jordanstewart3) is impressed by Hazard: “Eden HAZARD is a beast.”

West Brom defender James Hurst ‏(@hursty43) is shocked by David Luiz’s reckless moment: “David Luiz loves a cheap shot. #coward”

Former boxer George Groves ([email protected]) hopes to inspire his side: “Come on Chelsea!! #CFC”

Southampton defender Luke Shaw ([email protected]_shaw3) is impressed by the captain’s effort: “Big JT!!!”

Olympian Katharine Merry ‏(@KatharineMerry) correctly predicts the outcome of Torres’s penalty: “Penalty…Chelsea chance to sign seal and deliver !! I just said to OH he’s going to miss this…..he did. Stays 3-1 on the night and 3-2 #chelsea”

Reading striker Noel Hunt ‏(@boyhunt) feels sorry for the Spaniard: “Aww I’m gutted for him!!! I think most the footballing world want to see Torres back to his best!! Bar Liverpool fans I would say!!”

Former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker ([email protected]) is glad to see the English sides dominate in one European competition: “Cissé looks to have clinched it for Newcastle. Clean sweep. We own the Europa League!”

Chelsea striker Demba Ba ([email protected]) praises his team-mates: “Great win boys :-)”

Josh McEachran (@JMcEachran20) adds his congrats: “Great result for Chelsea!! Celeb juice time then bed.”

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton ([email protected]) is delighted to see his former side through to the quarter-finals: “Made up for Newcastle. Great ball in from Marveaux. The Toon march on in Europe…”

Finally, Swansea midfielder Wayne Routledge ‏(@WayneRoutledge) recalls a seminal moment in Newcastle’s history as Cisse nets the winner: “Ketsbaia-esque!!! Could be spelt wrong lol”
