Leighton Baines has hailed Roberto Martínez as a “terrific manager” with the Spaniard favourite to fill the vacant Everton post.
Former Toffees boss David Moyes is set to sign a six-year deal with Manchester United on 1 July after Red Devils legend Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of the season.
Martínez led Wigan Athletic to a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final but was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation to the Championship.
And Baines, who spent five years at the Latics, has been impressed by Martínez’s record at the DW Stadium outfit.
“It all sort of seems to be going on at the moment. Roberto Martinez has been linked with the job. He is a terrific manager so we will just have to wait and see,” Baines said.
“Thankfully we are in camp so I am keeping it at the back of my mind for now and concentrating more on England.”
Baines, who is currently on England duty in Brazil, has scored 22 goals in 246 appearances for Everton since moving to Goodison Park in 2007.
