Mahendra Singh Dhoni praised India’s all-round performance after they made light work of the West Indies to qualify for the Champions Trophy semi-finals.

Dhoni’s side produced a dominant bowling and batting display against their opponents, restricting the Windies’ strong batting line-up to just 233 runs before surpassing their required run target with more than 10 overs to spare.

The 31-year-old skipper admitted that he had feared the worst after Windies batsman Johnson Charles raced to an early half century, but praised his bowlers’ tenacity as they took the wickets that put India back in control.

“They got off to a good start in the first 10 overs,” said Dhoni. “But our bowlers did well to get back into the game, and getting regular wickets was the key as it built up pressure.

“When the seamers came back for their second spells they bowled the right length and that made the batsmen go for the big shots.”

Shikhar Dhawan was in impressive form with the bat-in-hand, posting his second successive century of the tournament, while opening batsman Rohit Sharma produced another tidy knock to reach 52 runs off of 56 balls.

And Dhoni said he was pleased that his big-name stars were living up to their billing.

“Shikhar did well for us in the Test that he played, we gave Rohit the option of opening and he took it as a challenge. It was something really needed for us, and changing into a really good fielding side has helped,” he added.

India’s captain insisted that his side will not be taking the final game against Pakistan any less seriously than the first two group matches, despite having already qualified for the semi-finals.

“I don’t think the Indian team has ever played a dead game,” said Dhoni. “But we’re always expected to win so the Pakistan game is an opportunity for us to improve.”
