Arsenal’s Serge Gnabry rejected the chance to return on loan to Stuttgart this summer, the Bundesliga club’s sporting director has revealed.

The 18-year-old, who scored his first senior goal for the Gunners in last month’s 2-1 win at Swansea City, began his career at Stuttgart before moving to Arsenal back in 2011.

And Jochen Schneider says that the midfielder had the chance to re-join his former club on a temporary deal over the summer, but opted to stay and fight for his first-team place at Emirates Stadium.

“It’s true, he had the chance to return in the summer but he opted to fight for his chance at Arsenal and deserves every respect for this decision,” Schneider told Bild.

“After his goal in Swansea I sent his father a text to congratulate him.

“We will continue to monitor his progress, but if he continues to go down the path he is currently going and becomes a starter for Arsenal, it will get difficult.”
