The 21-year-old netted the north London side’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday after struggling to have an influence on the right wing in the first half at The Hawthorns.
Wilshere, who was embroiled in a smoking controversy last week, has found himself overshadowed by Mesut Özil’s arrival this summer, as well as the outstanding form of team-mate Aaron Ramsey.
And former Liverpool star Redknapp reckons Arsène Wenger needs to play the England international in the centre of midfield in order to get the best out of the Gunners star.
“We learned two things about Jack Wilshere on Sunday: he can’t play wide left and he has character,” Redknapp told Daily Mail.
“He played well in the second half, but he was terrible before then. Myself and Jamie Carragher said he was so poor that he should come off, but Arsene Wenger persevered and he got his rewards.
“Young players suffer periods of inconsistency, but he doesn’t look a happy player out wide. When he came inside to a more central role, he looked more at home.” This story was originally published on AS English.
