Danny Care intends to use a summer away from rugby to his advantage and force his way back into the England team for the autumn internationals.

The scrum-half was rested for England’s summer tour to Argentina while he also missed out on a place on the British & Irish Lions tour, with his rival for the No9 Red Rose shirt, Ben Youngs getting a chance to make his mark.

But with England games against Australia, Argentina and the All Blacks coming next month before preparations start to regain next year’s Six Nations title, Care has plenty of opportunities to make up for lost time.

And while disappointed to miss out in the off season, the 26-year-old, who has 41 Red Rose appearances to his name, believes the enforced break has done him a world of good when it comes to fighting for his place.

“I really wanted to go, especially after the disappointment of missing out on the Lions,” Care said. “But the time off has been a real boon.

“I feel I’ve come back firing and just looking to do what I can for Harlequins and force myself into the reckoning for England.”
