Roberto Martínez believes Everton striker Romelu Lukaku can be as “good as he wants to be”.

The Belgium international has scored four goals in three appearances for the Toffees after sealing a season-long move to the Merseyside outfit from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

Everton boss Martínez described the 20-year-old forward as the “modern target man” and is impressed by the striker’s impact since completing a switch to Goodison Park.

“He’s not a typical No.9, he’s more than that,” said Martínez.

“He has an incredible awareness and his link-up play with Ross Barkley is not coincidence.

“He is a modern target man. There aren’t many of that type around – you have the clever sort with good mobility and space awareness. Then you’ve got the powerful one and he is a mixture, which is exciting.

“He can be as good as he wants to be.”

The Everton boss added: “He hasn’t played many 90 minutes in his career and it is important he has already played two for us.

“It is like seeing a young man who has now become a proper man.”

Lukaku has scored 21 goals in 48 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, Everton and West Bromwich Albion after moving to the Blues from Anderlecht in 2011.
