The 28-year-old midfielder has struggled to win over his critics at Madrid following a big-money move from Tottenham Hotspur to Los Blancos in August 2012.
The Croatia international has been linked with a move to the Premier League champions as David Moyes bids to strengthen his squad in January following a tough start to the season.
Despite failing to impress at the Bernabéu, Modrić believes his Madrid move is still the best thing to happen to the playmaker’s career.
“I have no doubt that the best thing that ever happened to me in football is to play in Madrid,” said Modrić, speaking to Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti.
Modrić has four years remaining on his Los Blancos contract, and the ex-Tottenham midfielder is adamant he will still be in the Spanish capital at the end of his deal.
“Where will I be in four years? Here,” Modrić added.
“Besides being a great club, my family feels amazing in Madrid.
“In football it is difficult to plan, but if you ask me, I would like to retire in Madrid. With titles, of course.”
