The England international was asked to play out-of-position on a regular basis for the Premier League champions as Sir Alex Ferguson tinkered with his starting line-up.
Rooney managed to score 12 goals in 27 appearances as the 27-year-old had a poor season by his own high standards, leading to talk of the striker joining Chelsea this summer.
Despite his dissatisfaction with his midfield role, Rooney is currently happy at the 20-time English champions – and is willing to drop deeper if the situation requires.
“I actually feel that when I played midfield I did okay but I didn’t want to play there,” Rooney said.
“I’m not saying that I wouldn’t, for instance, in the last ten to fifteen minutes of the game if we were hanging on a bit and I got asked to drop to the left or drop in and help us see through the game, that I’m going to throw my arms up and not do it.
“As I think I’ve said before, I really have been happy all summer. I know, from the outside looking in, it might not have seemed like that, but I have been.
“I’ve been settled. My wife had a new child, I’ve been really happy, I’ve been focused. I’m just delighted to be back playing, and free of injury and fit.”
