Dietmar Hamann believes that Julian Draxler is not the player that Arsenal need to sign in the January transfer window.

The Gunners are reported to be weighing up a £35m swoop for the Schalke playmaker, who has also been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent days.

The 20-year-old is one of Germany’s most highly-rated young talents – but although Hamann is a keen admirer of the midfielder, he does not think Arsenal are in need of another player in that position.

He’s an attacking midfielder and they have plenty of those already. What they need is a centre-forward

“Draxler is an exceptionally talented kid and is scoring a lot of goals for Schalke,” Hamann told talkSPORT.

“He will improve Arsenal but I’m not sure he’s the player they really need.

“He’s an attacking midfielder and they have plenty of those already. What they need is a centre-forward.

“The way Arsenal play he could probably start up front, but it’s not his preferred position.”
