Rooney, 28, has been struggling with a groin problem and has not featured since the 2-1 defeat by Tottenham on New Year’s Day.
We thought the best thing was to get Wayne Rooney to the warmer weather with one of the coaches
The England international has been sent away on a hot-weather break in the hope of speeding up his recovery time.
“Well, with Wayne we’ve sent him away on a hot-weather break,” Moyes said.
“His groin isn’t quite recovered yet so we’ve sent the fitness coach with him and he’s away with his family. It will give Wayne a bit of break.
“We always hoped to be able to do it at some time in the season and the groin is not as good as we’d hoped. Hopefully we can get him fit for Chelsea but we’ll see how he is. He’s away and will do some work with the fitness coach.”
Meanwhile, Moyes also confirmed that Van Persie remains sidelined due to a thigh problem.
The 30-year-old striker has been out of action since suffering the injury in the 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk on 10 December.
“Robin is going to be a little while,” said Moyes, who is hopeful that the Dutch striker could return for the trip to Chelsea on 19 January.
“We’ll do everything we can to get him back quickly.
“Wayne has got an injury and we have to hope for that, but we’ll see how it goes.
“It’s probably the right time to give it a chance to heal. We thought the best thing was to get to the warmer weather with one of the coaches and spend time with the family as well and it will make him better.”
