Ryan Nelsen admits Toronto are facing competition from Premier League clubs for Jermain Defoe’s signature in January.

The England international is currently out-of-favour at the north London side as Tim Sherwood continues to favour Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado over the 31-year-old forward.

I know Tottenham are getting offers everywhere for him

Defoe’s lack of playing time during a World Cup year has prompted reports that the Spurs striker could leave White Hart Lane this month, with Toronto boss Nelsen making no secret of his interest.

However the New Zealander, who spent six months at Tottenham before moving to the final club of his playing career Queens Park Rangers, revealed several clubs want to sign Defoe in January.

“I think that if you ask any Premier League club, then they would take Jermain right now,” Nelsen said.

“I know Tottenham are getting offers everywhere for him, and from top-four clubs in England at the moment as well.

“I know Jermain, I know his ability, I know his character so if we could get a player like Jermain, that would be absolutely incredible, but there are a lot of things in the air. There is nothing that has been done yet. He is not our player at the moment.

“We are working really hard and all I can say is that if a quality player like Jermain Defoe graces the MLS, it will be an amazing coup for the league.”
