The Belgium international has failed to impress since completing a £27.5m deadline day move to the reigning Premier League champions from Everton in the summer.
It’s a big move and he deserves some time
Fellaini has failed to score or make any assists in eight top-flight appearances this season, and the 25-year-old is currently sidelined with a wrist injury.
However his fellow Belgian and Manchester City captain Kompany tipped Fellaini to prove his doubters wrong and forge a successful career with the Red Devils.
“People shouldn’t forget that it is Fellaini’s first season at Manchester United,” Kompany told TalkSport.
“It’s a big move and he deserves some time.
“It will sound weird because he plays for the red half of the city but I want him to get back to his best.”
Kompany added that Fellaini remains an important part of the Belgium set-up ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
“He’s an important player for Belgium,” Kompany added. “He’s one of those special players. You just feel he can have a big impact on the team. They will need him a lot.
“It’s just a matter of time really because he’s got the lot.”
