Arsenal must beat Manchester United on Wednesday to keep their hopes of winning the Premier League title alive, according to Nigel Winterburn.

The Gunners head into the midweek clash after their 5-1 mauling at the hands of Liverpool dropped them into second place in the table and a point behind leaders Chelsea.

I believe over the next couple of seasons Arsenal will win a trophy

Manchester United, meanwhile, were pegged back by Fulham on Sunday as a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford further dented their hopes of a top-four finish.

And former Arsenal defender Winterburn feels that Arsene Wenger’s men must beat the defending champions at Emirates Stadium if they want to keep their bid for the title alive.

“Arsenal have to win, it’s quite simple,” Winterburn told talkSPORT. “They’ve got to show some character, they’ve got to beat a Manchester United team that’s not in great form.

“They have some fantastic players but they’re not playing to their full potential. If Arsenal don’t win then everybody will write them off.”

The 50-year-old added: “I’m pleased Arsenal have now stopped selling their best players and they’ve brought in [Mesut] Ozil because to me it makes a statement that maybe Asenal are starting to move in the right direction again.

“I believe over the next couple of seasons Arsenal will win a trophy. It may be too early for them this season but it looks as if things are moving forward in the club, rather than going reverse as it has done over the last three seasons.”
