Mikel Arteta admits he has never seen Arsene Wenger as angry as the Arsenal boss was at half-time at Anfield.

The Gunners, who were Premier League leaders before this weekend, trailed Liverpool 4-0 after a brace from Martin Skrtel and goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.

Liverpool went on to seal a 5-1 win as Sterling netted his second before Gunners captain Arteta scored a consolation goal from the spot.

And Arteta, who joined Arsenal from Everton in 2011, lifted the lid on Wenger’s furious reaction at the interval.

“We know we need to improve and face those games in a different manner because after 19 minutes we were 4-0 down and it was like a car crash,” Arteta told Arsenal’s website.

“The manager was really upset at half-time, that’s normal because it wasn’t good enough for this football club. It was the angriest I have seen him.”

Arteta urged Arsenal to respond to Saturday’s setback after a demoralising and heavy loss to their top-four rivals.

“We have had two big crises already,” Arteta added.

“I think the Manchester United defeat was a different game to this, but City and this one are really hard to take. We have to react because there is nothing we can do about this now.”
