The Gunners head to Merseyside knowing that a victory will maintain their place at the top of the Premier League in the first of a testing run of fixtures for Wenger’s men.

I have a big respect for the [Liverpool] fans there because they really know football

Arsene Wenger

Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-0 at Emirates Stadium when the sides last met back in November, and Wenger admits he is full of admiration for the Reds’ supporters.

“We’ve had some good wins at Anfield,” Wenger told a news conference at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground.

“I have a big respect for the fans there because they really know football and even sometimes when [we’ve] had good results, their behaviour is unbelievably loyal and has always been.

“They are a passionate crowd with a big history and they always behave in a passionate but very fair way.”

Wenger’s side successfully managed to keep star strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge quiet during November’s victory in north London.

The philosophy at our side has to be same – to master the ball and dominate the game

And the Frenchman concedes that doing the same will be more difficult at the Reds’ home ground, with the pair having netted 37 league goals between them this season.

“[Our plan is] basically us to dominate the game and leave them as few balls as possible,” Wenger added.

“That [keeping Suarez and Sturridge quiet] will be one of our targets of course but at Liverpool the task might be a bit more difficult. The philosophy at our side has to be same – to master the ball and dominate the game.”

Wenger added: “Liverpool are in a better position now than where they were before. They are a team who are fluent going forward and can put you under pressure.”
