The Red are currently fourth in the table and eight points behind leaders Arsenal following their 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion last weekend.
I would say that this year is probably too soon for us
Rodgers has maintained that the goal for his side this season is to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League, despite the Merseyside club briefly topping the table during the festive period.
And the Liverpool boss, whose side host Arsenal on Saturday, concedes that the Reds are not challenging for the top-flight crown this term.
“I look at the squads that they [Chelsea and Manchester City] have and have built up over the last few years and it’s very difficult for us, even though we’ve competed right the way through this season,” Rodgers told Sky Sports News.
“I wouldn’t say that we’ll be challenging for it this year. Of course, we’ll play a part in it because we’re professional and we want to fight to finish as high as we possibly can.
“There are six points between us and Chelsea, there’s still a lot to play for and we’ll be fighting right to the very end.
“But if I’m asked to give an honest answer then I would say that this year is probably too soon for us.”
