Juan Mata has challenged Manchester United to put their disappointing 2-2 draw against Fulham behind them by securing a positive result at Arsenal on Wednesday.

The Red Devils looked to be on course for victory at Old Trafford when Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick scored two second-half goals to eradicate the lead Fulham had taken through Steve Sidwell.

But Darren Bent netted a 94th-minute equaliser to leave United nine points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the Premier League table.

United travel to Emirates Stadium on Wednesday looking to secure what would be just their third win in seven top-flight outings.

And although Mata was bitterly disappointed to see the Red Devils’ lead slip against the Cottagers, the Spaniard is hopeful that David Moyes’ men can leave north London with a positive result.

“I think football is being cruel with us,” Mata wrote on his blog on grada360.com.

“We did everything to get the three points, but in the end this is about goals and Fulham scored in the last minute.

“It seems impossible if you look at the stats, but we couldn’t win and it would have been a very important victory.

“It hurts even more because in the second half we managed to come back after Fulham’s early goal.

“We did fight until the end, and that’s what I felt on the pitch, but once again we can’t give excuses.

“The way to carry on is to stick together, the team and the fans, learn from mistakes and be positive, and we will show the character this team has always had.2

The 25-year-old continued: “The week at the training ground was really good. I know my team mates better and I feel a great atmosphere in the dressing room. I hope we can show that next Wednesday against Arsenal.

“It’s a very tough game, but I have good memories from my last visit to the Emirates a few months ago [a 2-0 League Cup win with Chelsea] and I hope I can enjoy a good game as well.”
