Steven Gerrard will only get better in a deep-lying midfield role, according to Liverpool coach Mike Marsh.

The 33-year-old Reds captain was one of the star performers as he opened the scoring in a 4-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby last month.

It’s a position that’s not new to him as he’s played there on a number of occasions, particularly for England, so I think he’ll only get better at it

Gerrard had initially struggled to adapt to his new deeper midfield position after an uncharacteristically poor performance in a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa ahead of the local clash.

But former Reds midfielder and current coach Marsh reckons Gerrard can adapt to the role, adding that the England international is no stranger to player as a holding midfielder.

“He’s a world-class player,” Marsh told Liverpool’s website.

“He has played in numerous positions before and it’s another string to his bow.

“It’s a position that’s not new to him as he’s played there on a number of occasions, particularly for England, so I think he’ll only get better at it.”

Marsh heaped praise on Gerrard for his “outstanding” performance in the convincing win over Everton.

“I thought Stevie was outstanding on the night and you could see what the occasion meant to him from the way he celebrated his goal. I think he set me off actually!

“We’ve got a number of players who can play in that position and it just shows you what the manager thinks of Steven playing him in this new role.”
