The Slovakia international was the subject of interest from Rafael Benitez’s Napoli after Skrtel lost his first-team place to Jamie Carragher in the second half of the 2012/13 campaign.
He hasn’t surprised me as I knew he was an excellent player who was committed to the club here
However, Skrtel, who signed a new long-term deal in August 2012, has been ever-present this season despite the arrival of centre-halves Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure during the summer transfer window.
And Rodgers heaped praise on the 29-year-old defender ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday.
“Martin has been outstanding,” Rodgers told the ECHO.
“I thought he was excellent against West Brom last weekend as he has been throughout this season.
“I have seen a marked difference in his performance level this season.
“He hasn’t surprised me as I knew he was an excellent player who was committed to the club here. He really wants to be a Liverpool player.
“Martin went through a rough spell when I first came in as he was adapting to a new way of working, and how I ask my defenders to defend both with and without the ball.#
“I didn’t want to lose him last summer. He could have thrown the towel in and gone to another club but he took on board what I was saying and went away and analysed his game.
“He has responded remarkably well and it’s great credit to him. He’s taken what we spoke about on to the training field every day and now he’s benefiting from it.
“Now you see a real top class defender who is performing at a very high level.”
