The Uruguay international has been one of the driving forces behind Liverpool’s pursuit of a top-four finish this term, scoring 23 goals in 19 Premier League games.
Luis deserves to be at the Champions League level
The Reds came close to losing their prized asset in the summer after Suarez’s head was momentarily turned by Arsenal’s attempts to sign the 27-year-old.
But Rodgers heaped praise on the South American forward for his attitude since committing his future to the club, hailing the former Ajax man as “very amicable”.
“I always knew that once we’d ended the speculation with Luis it would be fine,” Rodgers said.
“He’s a good man. I’ve found since I’ve been here that he’s a very generous human being. I’ve found him very amicable in terms of everything I’ve spoken to him about. He’s a learner.
“He was in a difficult place in the summer and I understood and had empathy for his situation. Luis deserves to be at the Champions League level but we had to protect the club and fight for the club. We also had to sell it to him that this is still the place to play at that level.
“If you are at that level with Liverpool, and I’ve seen Champions League matches here in the past, there are not many better places than Anfield on a Champions League night. It was about managing the situation and being honest about the situation with him.”
