The first day of action in Sochi was a day where athletes would set records and etch their names in the history books.

Norwegian Ole Einar Bjoerndalen cemented his legacy as the greatest ever biathlete by winning a record-equalling 12th medal at the Winter Olympics, winning the biathlon 10km sprint.

Dutchman Sven Kramer retained his men’s 5,000m speed skating title, setting an Olympic record in the process as he scorched around the Sochi track.

American Sage Kotsenburg won the first ever snowboard slopestyle gold with a trick never seen before… one he would subsequently name the ‘Holy Grail’.

GB’s Jamie Nicholls & Billy Morgan produced excellent performances to finish sixth and 10th respectively.

Emotions ran high as a tearful Marit Bjoergen won the womens’ 15km skiathlon gold.

The Norwegian became the oldest woman to win a gold medal in the aftermath of the death of her teammate’s brother.

There was adulation for the home crowd as 15-year-old superstar Yulia Lipnitskaya produced marvellous routine to blitz her competition in the women’s short section of the figure skating team event which brought the crowd to their feet.

Canada’s Dufour-Lapointe sisters brought their sibling rivalry to the freestyle skiing mogul finals and left with two medals.

Justine, 19, and Chloe, 22, won gold and silver respectively in the oldest of the Olympic freestyle skiing events while third and eldest sister Maxime, 24, failed to make the final six.

Norway finished the day on top of the medals table, with two golds and four overall, one ahead of Canada and the Netherlands with the United States on two after a gold and a bronze.
