Slovakia’s Anastasiya Kuzmina has become the first woman to win two Olympic gold medals in a single individual event by winning the biathlon women’s 7.5km sprint.

The Russian-born Kuzmina made history as she retained the title she won four years ago at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games by demolishing the field.

Norwegian Tora Berger and Belarusian Darya Domracheva were seen as the favorites for the event but missed targets in the shooting incurred penalty laps that proved too much for the pair to overcome and enabled Kuzmina to fully capitalise on.

“I was thinking, ‘It so easy, Nastya, come on’ and it helped me,” said Kuzmina, who in Vancouver four years ago won her country’s first ever Winter Games gold since the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993.

“I felt the support of the fans here. The whole stadium was cheering for me – thanks , guys. I feel the home atmosphere.”

The women’s sprint event has been staged six times and she is the only woman still active of the six gold medallists in this event.

Kuzmina is the only woman to have won medals for Slovakia at the Olympic Winter Games, she also claimed silver in the pursuit and is the only Slovakian to have won multiple Olympic medals at the winter Games.

Her form following her victory in Vancouver had dipped, with few sprint victories since 2010, Kuzmina admitted she surprised herself by how she was able to rise to the occasion.

As she completed her run she was forced to wait to confirm if she had completed her heroic achievement.

“It was a long few minutes, looking onto the screen and waiting and waiting. Today it was good weather. Not windy and it was good for shooting,” she added.
