Olivier Giroud has explained his dedication to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster on its 25th anniversary after the Arsenal striker scored in a 3-1 win on Tuesday.

The France international produced a classy goal to put the Gunners 2-1 ahead as he expertly controlled a long ball before clinically finishing past West Ham United goalkeeper Adrian.

Gunners striker Giroud kissed his black armband before pointing to the sky at The Emirates as he celebrated his 14th Premier League goal of the season.

And the 27-year-old revealed he was moved by the story of the 96 supporters who lost lives at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989.

“I heard everybody talking about it before and I didn’t exactly know the story until a few days ago but I just wanted pay homage to them,” said Giroud.

“It’s something which made me feel consoling and I wanted to dedicate my goal to the families involved.”

Giroud was widely praised by those connected with Liverpool following his classy tribute, including former Reds midfielder David Thompson.
