Fijian centre Vereniki Goneva has signed a new contract to stay with Aviva Premiership club Leicester Tigers.

The 30-year-old, who has become a fans favourite in his two years at Welford Road, was expected to join French Top14 club Castres, but has committed his future to the East Midlands club.

“I’m very happy to stay with Leicester Tigers,” said Vereniki Goneva.

“The club, the players and the supporters have been very good to me since I came here.”

Goneva, who won the Premiership player of the month award in February has scored 18 tries in 37 appearances since joining Leicester from Tarbes in 2012, is the leading try-scorer this season with 11 from 21 games.

“Niki has become a very important player for us,” said Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill.

“He has been playing the best rugby of his career this season and we believe this environment will help him to be the best he can possibly be on the pitch.

“Leicester Tigers is a big club in English and European rugby, and we want to keep hold of our big players.

“I’m delighted that Niki has agreed to stay beyond the end of this season and it will be a very popular decision with the rest of the players and with our supporters.”

Goneva has also shortlisted for Player of the Year in the Tigers supporters’ awards.
