Eden Hazard has been ruled out of Chelsea’s clash with Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Saturday with a calf injury, Steve Holland has confirmed.

The Belgium international has not featured for the Blues since picking up the problem early on in the 2-0 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain this month.

The 23-year-old now faces a race against time to be fit for Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final first-leg clash at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

And asked if Hazard could be available for the last-four showdown, assistant boss Holland said: “I wouldn’t say he is definitely out but the fact he hasn’t yet trained with the rest of the group means he is a major doubt.

“He certainly won’t be fit for tomorrow [against Sunderland]. However, everyone else in the squad trained today so we’re not in bad shape.”

Chelsea head into Saturday’s clash against the Black Cats knowing that victory will take them to the top of the Premier League, with current leaders Liverpool travelling to Norwich on Easter Sunday.
