Brendan Rodgers says that he thought Steven Gerrard’s post-match huddle was “great” after their win against Manchester City last Sunday.

The 33-year-old Reds skipper was fired up after Premier League leaders Liverpool had edged to a dramatic 3-2 victory over title rivals Manchester City at Anfield.

Gerrard’s speech was caught on camera as the Liverpool midfielder, who has never won the Premier League title, called on his team-mates to forget the win and turn their focus to Norwich City this Sunday.

He is a wonderful ambassador for the club and his message for the team, was the message I’ve relayed all season. We’ll look forward and we’ll have time to reflect at the end of the season

“This does not f****** slip now,” Gerrard said. “Listen. Listen. This is gone.

“We go to Norwich. Exactly the same. We go again. Come on!”

And Liverpool manager Rodgers stressed that Gerrard’s passion is motivated by his desire to see the Reds win their first-ever Premier League title – and not selfish reasons.

“I thought it was great. I thought it encapsulated much of what the message has been from myself throughout the season,” Rodgers told his pre-match media conference.

“Everyone knows what I think of Steven and the importance he has to us, but what I will reiterate, that was for the club. That was for the team. He really is a selfless player.

“Many people might have looked at that and thought it was Steven Gerrard desperate to win the league.

“Of course he is, but he is a wonderful ambassador for the club and his message for the team, was the message I’ve relayed all season. We’ll look forward [to the next game] and we’ll have time to reflect at the end of the season.”
