Luis Suarez has played down the significance of potentially reaching a personal milestone as bids to help fire Liverpool to the title.

The Uruguay striker, who has 29 Premier League goals to his name, is three strikes away from becoming the all-time leading scorer in a 38-game season, surpassing Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the last few years I have tried to do my job as well as I can to help the team

However, the 27-year-old forward, who has also notched up 11 top-flight assists for his team-mates, insists that Liverpool’s success is far more important to him than any individual records.

“For myself, it is more important that Liverpool finish in a good position,” Suarez told Liverpool’s website.

“I try in every game to score because I am a striker. I love to make goals, but for me if I could swap being top scorer or winning the Golden Boot for the team finishing in the top four, that would be more important.

“Of course it would be special [to break the record]. In the last few years I have tried to do my job as well as I can to help the team and the Liverpool supporters.”

Liverpool are currently two points clear at the top of the Premier League table heading into Sunday’s clash against Manchester City at Anfield.
