The Red Devils travel to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night looking to book their place in the semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition after last week’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
When Chelsea won it in 2012, I think they nearly went out three times
And when asked if he believes that United can go on to win the final, Rooney told Uefa’s website: “Of course I do. I think we have to. We have seen in the past with so many different teams.
“Everyone has their favourites each year – Bayern or Barcelona – but it doesn’t always happen. For instance, when Chelsea won it in 2012, I think they nearly went out three times.”
Rooney, who is set to take a painkilling injection in order to be able to face Bayern, admits that United will have to be at their best against Pep Guardiola’s holders.
“We believe we can go through, we have good enough players,” he continued. “It will be tough because, for me, Bayern and Barcelona are probably the two best teams in the competition.
“We have to be at our best, we have to be focused and prepare well. We are ready. It is an exciting game for us, for the fans… it’s a massive game to be involved in.”
• Bayern have drawn the first leg in Europe 1-1 away 11 times, winning every tie.
• Bayern had been 33 games unbeaten away from home in the Bundesliga (W29 D4), breaking their German top-flight record set between December 1985 and August 1987.
• David Moyes is the first manager to take charge of United in Europe other than Sir Alex Ferguson since Ron Atkinson guided them to the Uefa Cup quarter-finals in 1984-85.
• Patrice Evra is available after a one-match ban in the first leg. Rio Ferdinand is a booking away from a suspension.
