Lewis Holtby has described Louis van Gaal as an “exceptional coach” amid speculation linking the Dutchman with the Tottenham Hotspur position.

Tim Sherwood, who replaced Andre Villas-Boas in December, isn’t expected to remain in the Tottenham hot seat beyond the summer after a mixed reign.

I don’t know whether he will be the new coach and of course it is not for me to decide

Van Gaal has made no secret of his desire to manage a Premier League club, and Spurs midfielder Holtby, who is currently on loan at Fulham, is a fan of the former Barcelona boss.

“There is always lots of talk,” Holtby told Goal.com.

“Louis van Gaal is an exceptional coach, you can’t deny that.

“He led big teams to big success. I don’t know whether he will be the new coach and of course it is not for me to decide. I don’t want to think about it now.”

In March, Van Gaal has fuelled speculation suggesting that he could be set to take over at Manchester United or Tottenham this summer by admitting that he dreams of coaching in England

“My ambition is to coach a top team in the Premier League. I have never experienced the atmosphere in England,” Van Gaal told Bild.

“I want to win the league title in a fourth country. That’s my objective and I want to fulfil it.

“Either that, or I will retire and move with my wife to Portugal.”
