Ray Parlour wouldn’t be surprised if Arsenal centre-half Thomas Vermaelen joins Manchester United this summer.

The Belgium international, who has one-year remaining on his current Arsenal contract, has been heavily linked with a switch to the Red Devils over the past few months.

Vermaelen found himself out-of-favour under Arsene Wenger last season as the Arsenal manager stuck with first-choice centre-half pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

And former Gunners midfielder Parlour doesn’t feel Vermaelen can be blamed should he agree a move to United in the summer transfer window in order to secure first-team football.

“If he wants to play football, and an offer comes in from a club like Manchester United, then it’s hard for the club to say, ‘no, you can’t go there, we want to sell you to a club in Italy or Spain’,” Parlour told talkSPORT.

“He was doing the captain’s notes last year in the Arsenal programme but not getting in the team. I can’t see that changing anytime soon. He wants to play first team football.”
