Belgium

Thibaut Courtois Looked sharp to keep out long-range efforts from Fayzulin and Kanunnikov. Unbeaten run of games for national team extended to 19. 6/10

Toby Alderweireld Lucky not to give away penalty for clumsy challenge in first half. 5

Daniel Van Buyten Didn’t put a foot wrong. Only survivor from previous World Cup match-up between these sides at 2002 tournament (4391 days ago). 6

Vincent Kompany Solid display from Manchester City skipper as he outmuscled Kokorin. Looked imperious in aerial duels. 7

Thomas Vermaelen Forced to come off after just 31 minutes, with a knee injury sustained in the pre-match warm up. 5

Axel Witsel Offered security to back line as he looked to break up any threat from Russia. 5

Marouane Fellaini Afro-haired midfielder given licence to roam by Witsel’s willingness to operate in holding role. 6

Kevin De Bruyne Former Chelsea midfielder tried to orchestrate attacks from advanced positions but execution of final pass was often lacking. 5

Dries Mertens Napoli winger looked lively in first 45 minutes with direct, pacey running but impact faded after the break. Never afraid to shoot. 6

Romelu Lukaku Struggled to influence game. Never looked comfortable in lone striker role. 3

Eden Hazard Heralded as his nation’s star man but winger was peripheral figure for majority of 90 minutes. Looked lethargic. Provided assist for winner. 5

Substitutes

Jan Vertonghen Lucky that his lack of awareness didn’t lead to opener to opponents. Looked uncomfortable at full-back. 4

Divock Origi Lille youngster offered more of a threat than Lukaku and showed great awareness and composure to break the deadlock. 6

Kevin Mirallas Everton forward struck post with whipped free-kick effort and should have doubled advantage late on. 5

Russia

Igor Akinfeev Much like his opposite number, had very little to do. Had no chance with winner. 5

Aleksei Kozlov Tendency by Hazard to cut into central positions meant that he enjoyed a quiet game. Offered overlap on regular basis. 6

Sergei Ignashevich Veteran defender comfortably stood up to everything thrown at him. 6

Vasili Berezutskiy Captain was barely troubled in defensive areas. Looked to start forward movement with raking passes from deep. 5

Dmitri Kombarov Initially struggled against the dangerous Mertens. Made more impact in attacking sense after the interval. 6

Viktor Fayzulin Keen to get beyond fellow midfielders and into advanced positions. Always available to receive ball. 7

Denis Glushakov Spartak Moscow midfielder acted as useful shield in front of defensive line. Perfect cross for Kokorin chance. 6

Oleg Shatov Looked to get attacks moving but made no discernible impact. 4

Aleksandr Samedov Often found himself in dangerous positions but didn’t make the most of them. 5

Aleksandr Kokorin Wasted fantastic opportunity to make it six international goals with poor headed attempt. Ball retention and hold-up play was often lacking. 5

Maksim Kanunnikov Rubin Kazan forward caused problems for Alderweireld in his full international debut. 6

Substitutes

Andrey Yeshchenko Should have done better with shot when given lots of space in rare attacking foray. 5
