Fernando Torres has welcomed Cesc Fabregas’s move to Chelsea – and the Spain striker has backed the Blues’s pursuit of Diego Costa.

The former Arsenal captain completed a reported £30m switch to the west London side last week after being deemed surplus to requirements at La Liga side Barcelona.

People have been saying for some time that Chelsea have signed a striker, and if it’s Diego, then it’s very welcome

And Torres, who moved to Chelsea for a British-record £50m fee in 2011, admitted that he would have loved Fabregas to have joined Chelsea a couple of seasons ago.

“I wish he could have joined us a couple of years earlier,” Torres told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

“He is a blessing for strikers, he always looks to find that final key pass, he’s the type of player Chelsea don’t have.”

Torres could start Spain’s second Group B game after replacing the struggling Diego Costa during la Roja’s 5-1 demolition by Holland in their opening World Cup game.

The Atletico Madrid striker, who scored 36 goals for los Rojiblancos last season, has also been linked with a £32m switch to the 2012 Champions League winners.

Despite being a potential direct rival for a starting spot at Stamford Bridge, 30-year-old Torres issued his backing for Chelsea’s pursuit of his Spain team-mate.

“People have been saying for some time that Chelsea have signed a striker, and if it’s Diego, then it’s very welcome,” Torres added. “The level of competition at big clubs should always be very high.”
