Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann scored late goals as France booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 2-0 victory over Nigeria.

The Super Eagles had a first-half goal ruled out for offside before Yohan Cabaye hit the crossbar in the final 15 minutes, with former Manchester United midfielder Pogba netting the decisive strike with eight minutes remaining before Griezmann polished off the win.

With France into the last eight, here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the former and current pros, as always, in chronological order.

Tottenham legend David Ginola (@DavidGinolaCeze) sets out the key talking points pre-match: “#FRANIG Have faith France, beware of a Nigeria very strong in the counter attack…”

Ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) feels Karim Benzema is wasted on the left wing: “Benzema on the left….does he look happy there??! Anytime France have looked dangerous Valbuena has been involved”

Former USA defender Alexi Lalas (@AlexiLalas) is trying to keep himself entertained after a goalless first half: “The Brazilian announcers pronounce Pogba with 3 syllables. Makes him sound even cooler. #FRAvsNIG”

Ex-Spain international Gaizka Mendieta (@GaizkaMendieta6) isn’t impressed with les Bleus: “#NGA goal disallowed, I think it was outside but a penalty not given, Evra “hugging” Odemwingie! #FRA haven’t done much so far…”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) feels Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has had a good old fashioned stinker: “Not the biggest shock at this World Cup that Giroud has been replaced. He’s had one!”

West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu (@mulumbuofficial) holds Mathieu Valbuena in high esteem: “Valbuena:Best player on the pitch !!”

And Pogba scores, prompting Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) to tweet: “Pogba! The one who got away”

Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane (@kdkilbane77) highlights the game changers: “Not a vintage French (performance) but had too much in the end for #NGA #valbuena excellent & #Griezmann very good when coming on. #FRA”

Finally, former Liverpool defender Djimi Traore (@Djimi_Traore19) believes Nigeria miss former Newcastle United man Obafemi Martins: “Congratulation to #FRA go next round.man of the match enyama #NIG miss @oba_martins ….#WorldCup2014”
