Jack Wilshere and Wayne Rooney have taken to social media to apologise to England fans following the Three Lions’ World Cup exit.

Roy Hodgson’s side were dumped out of the tournament in Brazil following Italy’s 1-0 defeat by Costa Rica on Friday.

England suffered back-to-back 2-1 losses to Italy and Uruguay and now face the embarrassment of a dead rubber against Costa Rica in their last Group D game.

And Manchester United striker Rooney took to his Facebook page to post an apology to Three Lions fans.

Rooney wrote: “Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out. Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven’t done better…gutted!”

Meanwhile, Wilshere posted on Twitter: “Gutted doesn’t come close to how I am feeling right now, Sorry to all the fans who came out and supported us, and everyone back home!”
