Robin van Persie hasn’t been at Manchester United long enough to warrant the captain’s armband, according to Andy Cole.

The 30-year-old striker, who moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in 2012, is one of the leading candidates to succeed Nemanja Vidic as the Red Devils’s next skipper.

Van Persie is already Holland captain after being appointed to the role by Louis van Gaal, who is set to take charge of United after the World Cup.

But former Red Devils striker Cole feels Van Persie hasn’t played a big enough role in the Manchester club’s history to receive such an honour.

“Robin has only been at the football club for two years,” Cole is quoted as saying by Daily Express.

“Some players have been there for 10 years, a part of Manchester United’s history.”

Despite doubting Van Persie’s claim to the captaincy role, Cole is unsure who should succeed Serbia international Vidic, who agreed a deal to join Inter Milan earlier this year

“I don’t know [who should be captain],” Cole added.

“I mean I’ve played at United for years and we’ve always had a captain. We always knew who would be captain.

“I’ve played with Brucey [Steve Bruce], Robbo [Bryan Robson], Roy [Keane], Gary Neville, Vidic… and you always looked at it and say they are going to captain the team.

“But looking at the United team now, Wayne [Rooney] has done it a few times but the captaincy has been passed around and you just don’t know.

“There is no one for you to pin your hat on and say he is going to be the next captain.

“Previously there has always been a leading candidate. But no one can say ‘right he is going to captain the team’.”
