Mario Balotelli and Rio Ferdinand both tweet their thoughts as England are beaten 2-1 by Uruguay at the World Cup

Luis Suarez left England on the brink of a World Cup exit as his two goals gave Uruguay a 2-1 victory in Sao Paulo on Thursday.

The Liverpool striker headed in a left-wing cross to put his side ahead in the 39th minute, but Wayne Rooney tapped home Glen Johnson’s low pass to make it 1-1 with 15 minutes left.

However, Suárez powered in the winner six minutes from time after latching on to a goal-kick to leave England bottom of Group D after Saturday’s opening loss to Italy.

Thursday’s big game inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here is the best of the post-match reaction.

Former England left-back Ashley Cole (@TheRealAC3) is one of the first to chime in after the whistle: “I’m gutted!!!!!!”

Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) sums up the game in two words: “Suarez: Clinical”

Ex-England man David James (@jamosfoundation) is staying positive: “Italy beat Costa Rica, then Uruguay, we are still in with a chance! #believe”

Curtis Davies (@TheCurtisDavies) felt the writing was on the wall: “Suarez missed one decent chance early in second half dragged it well wide……. lightning wasn’t going to strike twice #Eng”

Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) adds his voice to the mix: “Disappointed to see another England defeat this world cup.Suarez clinical world class finishing was the difference!”

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech (@PetrCech) believes the defeat will be valuable for England’s youngsters: “Very sad for England but this very bad experience is priceless for the future of all the young players involved … That’s football.”

Phil Neville (@fizzer18) analyses the game: “Devastated with that result didn’t think we deserved to lose- fine margins at this level have cost us defensively. We must continue with the building process of attacking philosophy- these young players have done well and will get better.”

Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) is not happy: “Going to bed. Can’t take the pain any longer.”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) keeps it short and sweet: “England football inquests are so boring. We got stuffed by Suarez – end. I’m going to bed.”

Italy striker Mario Balotelli (@FinallyMario) gets cheeky: “If we beat Costa Rica I want a kiss, obviously on the cheek, from the UK Queen.”

Tom Huddlestone (@Huddz8) is impressed by Suarez’s recovery: “Devo with England result. Fair play to Suarez, 4 weeks after knee surgery to play in a game that size and decide the game also.”

And finally, former Bolton captain Kevin Davies (@Kevin__Davies) is feeling uninspired: “Don’t quite know what to say. Will be supporting Italy I guess tomorrow.”
