Thomas Muller and Germany took full advantage following Pepe’s moment of madness as Joachim Low’s men were 4-0 winners against 10-man Portugal at the World Cup.

The Bayern Munich striker put the German into the lead from the spot before Mats Hummels doubled their advantage.

However, Pepe’s red card for headbutting Muller proved the turning point as the Manchester United target completed his hat-trick in the second half.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to Germany’s emphatic win.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) fancies the Germans to go all the way: “We could be watching the future World Champions here. Germany controlling possession, passing with purpose, disrupting in defence… …they have height, power, pace, a top keeper and can take penalties. All the ingredients. Only team incidentally to build their own…”

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen (@KP24) can’t understand why Nani isn’t shooting: “Ummmm, Nani, you allowed to score too!”

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) appears to reinforce Pietersen’s point: “Portugal look all over the place….they look desperate to pass the ball to Ronaldo every time they get close to goal! Take responsibility.”

Former Everton midfielder Phil Neville (@fizzer18) isn’t surprised by Pepe’s hot-headed moment: “Not surprised by that from Pepe!!”

Wigan winger James McClean (@JMcC_23) is almost a lone voice defending Pepe’s red card: “It is stupid what he did but still think thats a very harsh red card.”

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler @Robbie9Fowler remembers the last time a 10-man team came from three down (Tottenham 4 Man City 3, 2007): [email protected] remember the last team to come back from 3 down with 10 men?”

Arsenal icon Ian Wright (@IanWright0) wants to see one of the World Cup’s household names protected: “Portugal why have not taken Ronaldo off !!! Save him for Ghana and USA!”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) wonders if Muller can create history: “Muller scores his 3rd. No player has ever won back to back Golden Boots!”

Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta (@GaizkaMendieta6) isn’t surprised to see Germany winning – and comfortably: “Germany 4-0 Portugal. Disappointing Portugal & Germans doing what they know best…win! 1st hat trick of WC for Müller.”

Ex-Liverpool striker Don Hutchison (@donhutch4) knows how he would react to a team-mate being as stupid as Pepe: “Pepe should be ripped in the dressing room after! He Let his mates down big time in that heat!!! He is the villain not Muller.”

Chelsea star André Schürrle (@Andre_Schuerrle) is delighted: “Yeeeeeeeesssss!!!! Great first match, great team and great Müller hahaha #germany #WorldCup2014”

And finally, Arsenal star and Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil is understandably thrilled with the result: “Superb start into the world cup tournament. that’s the way we should continue! ‪#‎DFBTeam‬ ‪#‎WorldCup‬ ‪#‎Brasil2014‬”
