Paulo Wanchope has challenged Joel Campbell to maintain his level of performance and secure his future at Arsenal next season.

The Costa Rica striker has been one of the surprise packages of the World Cup so far after scoring in his country’s shock 3-1 victory over Uruguay in Group D on Saturday night.

He needs to perform even better against Italy and then England to have that chance to go back to Arsenal

Campbell is yet to don an Arsenal shirt despite completing a move to The Emirates in 2011, with the 21-year-old spending time on loan at Lorient, Real Betis and Olympiacos.

And former Derby County and Manchester City striker Wanchope wants Campbell to perform “even better” against Italy and England in their remaining Group D games.

“He really wants to go back to Arsenal and play, and I told him that the only way to do that is on the pitch,” Wanchope is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“He did well against Uruguay and I think that he needs to perform even better against Italy and then England to have that chance to go back to Arsenal. I’m sure that Arsene Wenger will have a look at him.

“He will improve. You saw the game. He is capable to play up front or on the sides so he will do well.”
