Tim Howard Failed to stand tall as Nani finished high into the roof of the Everton man’s goal. After initially flapping at air as Nani hit the woodwork, Howard recovered well to tip Eder’s effort to safety. The Toffees man made amends for another mistake by diving low to deny Meireles but do nothing but 94th-minute leveller. 7

Fabian Johnson Unafraid to push forward to help USA break down the Portuguese defence. Cut in from the right wing to fizz an effort wide. Crunched the Fifa Ballon d’Or winner before half-time for good measure. Great attacking performance from the full-back. 8

Geoff Cameron Poor clearance fell into the path of unmarked Nani. Looked panicked just after half-time, too, as Eder failed to punish the USA centre-half. Made amends with a superb tackle to stop Eder as Portugal attempted to counter. 6

Matt Besler After a horror start, Besler recovered well like the rest of the USA defence. Read the game well and intercepted a number of attempted through passes. 7

DaMarcus Beasley Former Manchester City defender offered a threat on the right wing with his pace. Caused his opposite Portuguese number countless headaches. 6

Alejandro Bedoya Perhaps the most muted of all USA’s midfielder. Replaced in the second half. 5

Kyle Beckerman The Real Salt Lake was fortunate to escape unpunished for plunging an elbow into Meireles’s face. Was sensible in possession aside from an ambitious long-range shot. 6

Jermaine Jones His burst from midfield earned USA a free-kick which Dempsey fired narrowly over the crossbar. His moment-of-the-match came in the 64th minute. Collected a loose ball from a USA corner and guided his finish past Beto from outside the area. A stunning strike. 8

Michael Bradley Earned the nickname Captain America during his Roma days, but Bradly almost produced a Roy of the Rovers moment as his powerful shot flew just over the crossbar. Denied by Costa with the goal at his mercy. Only blot on his scorecard was a loose pass that led to Varela’s late leveller. 7

Graham Zusi Teed up Dempsey, but the USA captain was denied by Costa. Lacked the subtle skills of the Portuguese midfielders but more than made up for that with his tireless energy. Did the simple jobs well. 6

Clint Dempsey Looked to find his range from a 13th-minute free-kick. Ran through on goal but angle was too tight for the forward. The former Fulham midfielder was a constant nuisance, calling on all his vast experience. The 32-year-old deservedly netted what looked like being USA’s winner nine minutes from time. 9

Antonio Beto Fully airborne to watch Dempsey’s free-kick effort over the crossbar. Continued his battle with the former Fulham man as he guarded his near post well. Could do little about either of USA’s goals. 6

Joao Pereira Didn’t look comfortable contending with Beasley on the counter-attack. A disappointing display. 6

Bruno Alves Caught Jones on the shin as the American looked to break past the Portuguese defence. Lucky to escape a caution. Missed a potential clearing chance for USA’s second goal. 5

Ricardo Costa Covered well to block Dempsey’s strike in the Portugal area. Vital clearance off the line to deny Bradley in the 55th minute. 7

Gomes Andre Almeida Didn’t have a great first half as USA full-back Johnson had plenty of joy down his wing. Replaced at half-time. 5

Joao Moutinho Moutinho provided the touch of class to the midfield with his distribution. Ultimately, though, couldn’t provide a telling pass to release star man Ronaldo. 7

Miguel Veloso Struggled to contend with USA’s energetic midfield. 5

Raul Meireles The former Liverpool man looked to make the most of Beckerman’s elbow. Bypassed for much of the match by the American midfield. Disappointing performance and replaced in the second half. 5

Nani Gratefully accepted a gift-wrapped goal as the USA defence stood still and Nani lifted his finish over Howard. Didn’t really kick on from his strike. 6

Helder Postiga The former Tottenham Hotspur man lasted less than 18 minutes as Paulo Bento’s striker crisis continued. N/A

Cristiano Ronaldo Cut a frustrated figure. Frustrated with the referee and his team-mates as the Real Madrid star received little support. The 29-year-old did show his talent with a couple of showboats before flashing a second-half strike horribly wide. Produced a world-class cross for Varela’s equaliser. 6

Substitutes

Eder Replaced Postiga early in the first half. Blasted a scissor-kick into the stands after a USA mistake. Was wasteful. 5

William Did well when he was introduced in the second half. 6

Silvestre Varela Disappointing when he came on. Did net a thunderous 94th-minute equalising header. 7
