The Gunners are expected to complete a £16m deal to sign Chambers on Monday as Wenger looks to land his fourth signing of the summer.
I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future
19-year-old Chambers has made 18 Premier League starts during his short Saints career, playing at centre-half and full-back.
But Wenger feels the English premium placed on domestic players means that the Gunners had to act to snap up Chambers.
“He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions,” Wenger is quoted as saying.
“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”
