Ross Barkley has earmarked Champions League qualification as a priority for Everton next season.

The 20-year-old midfielder signed a new four-year deal with the Toffees on Tuesday afternoon to commit his future to the Goodison Park outfit amid reported interest from Manchester United.

And Barkley, who scored six goals in 34 Premier League appearances last season, is hoping to play in Europe’s premier club competition and win silverware after penning a new long-term contract.

“I’m a young lad and obviously I’ve got a lot of things to accomplish and hopefully get better for Everton,” Barkley told Everton’s website.

“Last season went well – we got into Europe, which was our ambition.

“Obviously next season we need to push on and hopefully get into the Champions League and a bit of silverware as well.”

Barkley underlined Roberto Martinez’s influence on his career since the Spaniard took charge of the club last summer.

“He’s been a great manager and had a great start to his Everton career,” Barkley added. “He has helped me out a lot.

“He gives me freedom on the pitch and a chance to express myself – he’s been a great person for me.

“Being a local lad, playing for your local team and the team that you support is just a great feeling.”
