Robbie Savage says Manchester United need to make more world-class signings like Angel di Maria to challenge Chelsea or Manchester City.

The Argentina international made his Premier League debut at Turf Moor on Saturday but the £59.7m signing was unable to prevent United playing out a goalless draw with Burnley.

Di Maria is world class – would the others get in City or Chelsea’s best 11

Di Maria was the brightest spark for Louis van Gaal’s under-performing United side as the 26-year-old looks to replicate his La Liga impact in the English top-flight.

“To challenge City & Chelsea Utd need to sign world class players. Di Maria is world class – would the others get in City or Chelsea’s best 11?” Savage posted on Twitter.

Savage added that Van Gaal is escaping the volatile criticism that former United manager David Moyes faced last season thanks to the Dutch coach’s reputation.

“Van Gaal’s reputation exonerates him from the criticism and scrutiny moyes had to endure – tactics ineffective, recruitment poor?” added Savage.
