The Belgium international has been linked with a move to the Gunners’s rivals Liverpool and United after falling behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the pecking order last season.
Yes it’s a possibility that he goes, if he goes we have to replace him because he’s an important player in our squad
Vermaelen, who moved to Arsenal from Eredivisie in 2009, is currently nursing an injury which the former Ajax centre-half picked up during Belgium’s victory over Russia.
And Wenger said that Vermaelen would stay at the north London side while the 28-year-old recovers from his current injury problem but could leave the Gunners before the summer transfer window comes to a close.
“At the moment, Thomas Vermaelen is here, he is injured at the moment for a short-term injury,” Wenger said.
“It could happen, yes it’s a possibility that he goes, if he goes we have to replace him because he’s an important player in our squad.
“I expect him to stay but he, of course, did not play enough games last year. For me he’s a very important player but I couldn’t guarantee him the games he wanted last year.”
