Patrice Evra says Louis van Gaal was sad to see the experienced left-back leave Manchester United this summer.

The France international called time on his decorated Red Devils career earlier this summer to complete a move to Serie A champions Juventus.

Manchester had great confidence in me. I spoke to Van Gaal, who was sorry to see me go, but I wanted to come to Juventus

Evra was a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s United side that collected five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League crown in seven seasons.

And the 33-year-old admitted it was a difficult decision to leave the 20-time English champions for Juventus.

“It was really difficult to leave Manchester United, it was for personal reasons,” Evra said.

“Three months before the end of the season I asked to speak to other clubs and when I knew Juventus were interested it was an easy decision, but the most difficult thing was to leave Manchester United.

“Manchester had great confidence in me. I spoke to Van Gaal, who was sorry to see me go, but I wanted to come to Juventus.”

Evra scored seven goals in 273 Premier League appearances for United following his move to Old Trafford from Monaco in 2006.
