Paul Merson believes a top-four finish would represent a “massive step forward” for Manchester United this season.

The Red Devils are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season after losing to Swansea City before a 1-1 draw with Sunderland last weekend.

If they get top four, they’ve pulled up trees. That is a massive, massive step forward for United

Louis van Gaal’s side suffered a shock 4-0 loss to League One side MK Dons in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night, further compounding the crisis at Old Trafford.

But Arsenal legend Merson thinks the new manager would be performing a minor miracle if the 63-year-old guided the 20-time English champions to a top-four finish.

“What happened mid-week as well, it ain’t right there at the moment,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“If Van Gaal sits down and looks at, it is more work than he thought if he is being honest. There is a lot of work to be done.

“If they get top four, they’ve pulled up trees. That is a massive, massive step forward for United if they get in the top four.

“That isn’t being disrespectful or funny, it is how far they are [from their rivals] over a 38-game period.”
